Suspected of Living Above Means (SLAM)
When a household claims expenses that exceed its income, it is considered a SLAM case.
A client may report income that is less than expenses such as:
shelter;
out-of-pocket medical expenses; and/or
dependent care expenses

Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) values are excluded from the calculation when determining a SLAM circumstance. |
Why is it important for Case Managers to Explore SLAM?
By clarifying the household’s actual financial situation and financial obligations, the Department can better understand the needs of the household and attempt to assist with those needs by making appropriate referrals while maintaining the integrity of Department programs. Asking clarifying questions helps you to know what next steps need to be taken, so if necessary, the correct type of verification request can be sent to a client.
